MR: Hi Brendon how have you been keeping during these testing times?
Hey Michael Roach, it’s great to be talking to you. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster in this lockdown to be honest. When it all kicked off I was actually in Thailand and I remember being out having some food and suddenly everyone started getting up and leaving around me. One of the other tourists told me that all the flights home had been cancelled and of course I suddenly started to panic. I rushed back to the hotel to find that my flights had also been cancelled and then spent the night trying to book flights to get home but every time I booked a flight it was cancelled within minutes. The next morning I packed quickly and got a flight to Bangkok and then spent 10 hours in the airport waiting to see if I can get on a flight home, luckily I managed to get a flight! Woohoo!
Once I finally made it back to England I was greeted by a series of emails saying that all the work I had planned had been cancelled, it was like a light switch, overnight I had gone from being busy and employed to stranded and broke.
As you can imagine, this hit me like a ton of bricks and before you know it those horrible thoughts were creeping in my head. I had to take a minute. I made the decision to come off social media for a couple of weeks and I deactivated all my profile's just so that I could sit back and figure out what made me happy rather than creating things for social media and other people.
One of the things that I had always wanted to do was to travel the world and teach/work in the dance industry and in as many countries as possible. Therefore, I made a plan and started to take action! The thing I find amazing about taking action is the actions always create momentum. Before you knew it my hard work was sending out the right vibrations and attracting similair people.
The short version is, I have literally gone from nothing and feeling as low as I can remember to helping launch one company and launching two more of my own, working sometimes 18 hour days. Too many, this sounds a lot but to me being a workaholic is my happy place.
MR: Let's talk about dance, at what age did you start to learn to dance and was dancing something you always loved to do ?
Well, I actually didn't start dancing till I was 18 years old which in this industry is super late and to be honest, no, Dance wasn't in the plan! I was actually studying fashion at the London College of Fashion and remember walking past Pineapple Dance Studios and looking through the window and being absolutely blown away by what I saw, I had to try it!. Little did I know this was going to lead to the rest of my life.
MR: You have Choreographed for some of the top artists around the globe. How did this come about and have you got anything in the near future you are excited about to do with Choreographing?
Honestly, hard work and an incredible team. It wasn't till very late in my dance career that I decided choreography was the path I wanted take. I actually gave up dancing at one point because I got so badly injured on a contract and I made the decision that my body was telling me that it was time to quit. In that break I went on a bit of a personal development and life coaching journey where I finally made the decision that I really missed dancing but didn't want to be a dancer anymore and came back as a choreographer full time! I jumped into action and emailed close to 100 different people asking if they could help me and I had one reply from an amazing man called Stuart Bishop who runs Love Rudeye dance agency. I was with that agency a good part of five years and they really helped develop my career into what it was today, including getting me some of the ‘BIG’ jobs. I also work with some incredible directors who call me when a job comes up that requires my skill set.
Honestly, the future feels like it's constantly changing right now. I've just been working on a job where I was a directing as well as choreographing and I loved it! I suppose all I can say is watch this space because I feel like there's amazing things coming on top of me travelling the world, of course!
MR: You are the Co-Creator of DNACERS an online dance school with lessons from some of the top Choreographers around. When did you first have the idea and how did you approach other Choreographers about taking part ?
Well, the creation of the company wasn't mine, the company was created by two incredible people who are not dancers/choreographers but have worked from an entrepreneurial point of view in the dance world. I originally got called to come on the platform as an exclusive choreographer and the deal sounded so amazing I bit their hand off. However, me being me decided to bug them for a couple of weeks telling them how I would run the platform, what I would change and how I would want to be paid.
I still remember them asking for a call with me and me thinking that I'd annoyed them and that might be the last I hear from them. But I'm happy to say it was the complete opposite, they were so happy with a lot of my ideas that they asked if I would come on as their business development choreographer and help them create a platform that will revolutionise the dance industry and create a payment structure for teachers and choreographers that is unheard-of.
So, pretty much the next day, we got to work on co-creating a platform that is trying things in a different way, in a better way and in a way that pays the teachers and choreographers correctly, on a platform that is so user-friendly, we believe we have created the Netflix of dance!
As you can tell from the above I created a platform that I would want to be on and pays in a way that I would want to be paid as a choreographer. Once I achieved this, it really wasn't that hard to get people to sign up and lets just say the meetings started!
On the flip-side we also created a platform that is incredible value for money as not only do the dancers get unlimited access to the on-demand videos they also get 50% off all the live classes from our incredible choreographers… And to put the cherry on the pie if they use the ‘BH25' they will get 25% off the subscription for life!
MR: Don't tell anyone but a goal of mine is to become famous and take part in strictly hahaha (very serious about this). Is this something you would love to take part in or maybe work behind the scenes ?
That's definitely a dream of mine to lol! I would absolutely love to work behind the scenes on that show as a choreographer. I'm just waiting for that call where I will pretend to be super cool on the phone and then the minute they hang up I'll probably jump around my room!
MR: Dancing is an amazing way to keep fit. When you created DNACERS was this one of the goals you wanted to achieve as well has teaching the finer art of dance ?
DNAcers is for anyone who has an interest in dance from the absolute beginner like you said who's looking to just keep fit to the pro dancer! We are also going to be opening a part to the platform that's going to be called ‘Mentoring and Mental Health’. We want it to be a one stop shop for anything dance based online.
AGAIN, use the discount code ‘BH25’ and sign up and anyone can get a 25% discount off the subscription fee’s for LIFE!
MR: Finally you have over 100k on social media, thats amazing. Have you been approached by some of the celebrities to help them with learning to dance, and can we in the near future give myself and some of my readers a quick lesson?
I have! Unfortunately I can't tell you about many of them because the way it is initially set up is you generally have to sign an NDA before entering into any agreement.
Ahhhhh, I would absolutely love to give a lesson to all your readers… Let's make it happen.
